Personal History: The (self-proclaimed) Greatest Psychic of the 21st Century

Personality: Arataka Reigen is a conniving, hard-to-read conman with an often obnoxiously overbearing confidence, to put it as kindly as possible. Though it can be difficult to guess what exactly is going through his head due to his habitual dishonesty, Reigen is incredibly animated and expressive. He talks with his hands out of habit, and the emotions on his face tend to go from zero to one hundred within a few seconds.

Anyone who interacts with him will notice that he speaks like he has some sort of authority even to people who seem to far outclass him in power and status, and seems relatively unphased by the supernatural or the existence of special abilities. This blase attitude comes not only from psychic and spiritual phenomena being typical occurrences in his world, but his own personal belief that having superpowers and the like is no different from any other gifts people have. People who can run fast, people who can sing, people who have telekinesis? They’re all equal in Reigen’s eyes, and anyone who considers themselves superior to others because of their natural gifts simply isn’t living in reality.

He has an undeniable charisma in conversation, and is quite confident in his persuasion and debate skills, having very rarely lost an argument in his life. Reigen is a mentally agile man who can perform under pressure, with a cautious approach to gathering information and intuitive problem-solving, if things such as proclaiming to do one thing and immediately doing something else completely out of nowhere to throw people off can be considered intuitive. It is also difficult to trick him, as he’s quite perceptive of other people’s behavior and has enough social psychology knowledge to guess what someone might be thinking. Dealing with him can be confusing enough with his normal eccentricities, but combined with his unpredictability and social savvy, he’s an incredibly frustrating enemy to have.

Throughout his work in the past, Reigen has lied to people about being a psychic, so at this point dishonesty has become completely natural to him, with little to no qualms about his manipulation and lying as long as it’s not actively hurting anyone. There are very few people that would manage to make him feel guilty about his manipulative tendencies, and they would have to get particularly close to him to do so.

Despite his numerous character flaws and questionable business practices, Reigen is a surprisingly principled man that places more priority on being a good person than one might expect from someone who makes a living off deceit. He believes that it’s wrong to hurt other people and takes his responsibilities as an adult very seriously. His adult instincts will usually show up when he’s dealing with children (particularly teenagers who would be close to the age of his student), as he doesn’t want them to bear burdens they shouldn’t have to at that age. Having principles also bleeds into his business at times: even if it’s a scam, he prefers to leave his clients with some peace of mind over the spirits haunting them regardless of the authenticity of the haunting. He can’t do much for actual exorcism, but things like remedying stiff shoulders supposedly caused by evil spirits are in his power. Reigen also has high emotional intelligence via his skills in reading people’s social psychology, and oftentimes he has been able to provide concrete advice to people.

Beyond his principles and how easy it is for him to lie, Reigen is actually quite a lonely person. He’s the type who has several acquaintances and people he’s connected with through work, but has little to no close friends. He’ll hide and deny any indication that he feels alone or depressed, of course, for the sake of his pride and also because of the fact that he doesn’t like the "real" him that much. A lingering existential crisis over how he’s ultimately kind of pathetic and might die alone has been in his head for a while, even if some influences in his life have given him evidence of the contrary.

Main Motivation: His main goal in life is to receive recognition and validation, hopefully by leaving a positive impact on others: this wish has been defined for him by the vague desire to be "somebody" that he wrote an essay over nearly a decade ago. At this point in his life, however, he’s starting to think he might settle for keeping his ambiguously honest business running since he doesn’t have much else going for him and he's got to eat. As for goals on the train, he mostly just wants to figure out what the supernatural force behind this nonsense is so he can get back home.

Skills: Reigen has the ability to see some powerful spirits due to being infused with psychic power in the past, but he does not possess any sixth sense or psychic abilities of his own, despite his claims to the contrary.
His real strengths are his conversation skills and quick thinking under stress.
A lot of his supposed exorcism techniques are basically physical therapy. Reigen is actually quite a skilled masseur.
He has moderate martial arts ability and enough proficiency to knock people unconscious if necessary: apparently he’s a green belt in Shaolin kung-fu.
Some of his specific “special techniques” are listed on the wiki detailing his background, but he’s also likely to come up with more on the spot from his existing skill set.
He also claims to be an expert at rock paper scissors, and once placed 4th in a whack-a-mole championship.
